Hand Axe/Hammer

Found by G. Lockley along Drakes Creek in Hendersonville. Looks like a natural Quartz Coble stone with plenty of pecking and polishing. Several iron oxide plow marks but no damage to this nice relic. Fits great in hand and weighs about 1 lb 11 oz.

Not sure about material but it does have alot of color in it that is similar to Horse Creek chert. It is a little roughly shaped from use and abuse but a great example of an ancient farm impliment. Use-wear on the pole corner is old and patinated.

Nutting Stone

Found on or near the Shllow Bluff Island site. It has a 1/2" nutting hole on one side, a started dimple on the other, with a third one on its side as seen in top photo (3 total). Great pecking and use-wear on this ancient food utensil impliment.

Salvaged Chisel

found by G. Lockley along Drakes Creek, in Hendersonville. Material is a very heavily polished and patinated Fort Payne chert. These tools were reused until they had no other use as an impliment, then discarded.

Material is Limesttone and is a very large example of the type. Has one small nick in bit (as seen in upper photo), but does not affeact its overall shape and size. Has nice polish and loaded with mineral deposits Weighs in at over 3 lbs, 2 ozs. !

This artifact was found on March 25, 1949, in two pieces and glued back together. Looks to be part of a very large stone bowl that was probably broken and salvaged to be used as a possible hoe or digging spade. Tapered to a bit 3/4 aound the tool. Great old study piece.
